Water, mountain and an evening at the ryokan
01Fuji from the train window
Look out of the train window and Fuji appears, sometimes clear and sometimes behind cloud. The Romancecar takes about 80 minutes from Shinjuku.
02Onsen and yukata
Yukata left over right, wash thoroughly before the bath, and keep the small towel out of the water.
03The pirate ship
The crossing of Lake Ashi takes about 30 minutes. The Fuji stays in view when it shows itself.
04The torii on the shore
The Hakone Shrine gate stands in the water, a stone path leading to it. Loveliest in soft morning light.
05Fuji on a clear day
Clear days are common in winter and early morning. Nobody can promise one, so we plan with reserve.

Experiences
Hakone without the queue
The quiet hours and paths that day trippers rarely see.

The torii before breakfast
By day, many queue for the photo in the gate. Early in the morning it is often just a few minutes. The shrine grounds are open around the clock.

Cedar avenue of the old Tokaido
About 500 metres of old trade road beneath more than 400 cedars, planted some 400 years ago. Walk it between Moto-Hakone and Hakone-machi.

Pampas grass in morning dew
From late September to early November the grass turns gold. In the morning, dew holds the light, late in the afternoon the field glows warm.

The woodland trail at Pola
A path through tall forest, with birdsong and sculpture beside the museum. The museum opens at 9 am, last admission is 4.30 pm.
When Hakone is at its best

Spring
Clear mornings, with Fuji still wearing its snow cap.

Summer
Deep green around the lake. In the rainy season haze often hides Fuji.

Autumn
The pampas grass of Sengokuhara turns gold from late September.

Winter
Dry air and often the clearest view of Fuji. The bath steams in the cold.
Good to know for winter
The ropeway between Sounzan and Owakudani is out of service from 7 to 24 December 2026, with replacement buses running. Between Togendai and Owakudani it rests from 12 January to 26 February 2027.
According to the museum, the Pola Museum of Art and its forest trail are closed on 1 December 2026 and from 8 to 26 April 2027.
As of October 2026. Operators can change dates, which is why we plan your days in Hakone with a reserve.
