Japan
Tokyo · Hakone · Kyoto
A country that does not resolve its contrasts but lets them stand side by side. In Tokyo, Edo gardens and shrines sit between towers of glass. In Hakone, a ryokan with its own hot spring waits above the volcanic lake. In Kyoto and Nara stand two thousand temples, Zen gardens and the free-roaming deer of Nara Park. The shinkansen connects all of it within hours. We plan the journey so that between the guided days there is still time to discover a quarter simply on foot.

Eight days are enough for Tokyo, Hakone and Kyoto, which is the Golden Route. Adding Nara, Takayama, Kanazawa, Hiroshima and Miyajima takes fourteen, which is Classic Japan. Deep Japan spends thirteen days on the Kiso valley, Nagoya and Inuyama and favours lesser-known stops in return. All three journeys end in Kyoto, flying home from Kansai.
By shinkansen, and on the branch lines by limited express and local trains. The tickets are included in every package, with reserved seats on the shinkansen routes. Large luggage is a burden on the train, so we recommend forwarding it from hotel to hotel, roughly 2,000 to 3,000 yen per suitcase, paid in cash on the spot. From 160 centimetres in total dimensions, a piece of luggage needs a reserved luggage seat on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu lines, and there are only four to five of those per carriage.
A ryokan is the traditional Japanese inn, with tatami mats on the floor, a futon instead of a bed and a multi-course regional dinner. An onsen is a bath fed by a hot spring, often in the open air.
Spring and autumn. The cherry trees bloom in late March and April, and in October and November the foliage turns around temples and gardens. Both seasons are also the most expensive and the busiest. Summer is hot and humid, winter is clear and cold, and there is snow in the mountains. We plan the journey so that route and properties suit the season.
MIRA KODA works without a catalogue, without group tours and without off-the-shelf packages. Every journey is built around you from the first conversation onwards, from the route to the properties and guides through to pace and experiences. A single point of contact accompanies the entire planning and is reachable during the journey. At the end, every guest receives a Haptic Koda, a hand-bound photo book of the journey on fine art paper.
