Edo gardens beneath glass towers
Shogun gardens, temples and markets among skyscrapers. Often a single street divides old Tokyo from the new.

Old and new, street by street
01Zojo-ji and the red tower
The Tokugawa temple dates back to 1393, the tower behind it to 1958.
02Edo garden, glass towers
Hamarikyu belonged to the shoguns. Its pond still rises and falls with the tide, towers loom on the shore.
03Kagurazaka at dusk
Cobblestones, dark timber walls, lanterns. The quarter is still a geisha district today.
04Tsukiji, bite by bite
The outer market stayed when the wholesalers moved to Toyosu. Sea urchin, skewers, omelette on a stick.
05Shibuya after dark
Screens, buses, streams of people. The counterpoint to the gardens is part of Tokyo too.

Experiences
Tokyo beyond the crossings
Quiet places and craft that rarely make the usual programme.

Forest path before the crowds
The forest of over 100,000 donated trees is hushed in the morning. The northern approach via Sangubashi is calmer.

Yanaka Ginza, old Tokyo
A small shopping lane as it was before the war. Right next to it lies the quiet cemetery with the grave of Tokugawa Yoshinobu, the last shogun.

Kuramae, the craft quarter
Small workshops for leather and paper. At Kakimori you can compose your own notebook and ink colour.

Edo-Tokyo Museum
Reopened on 31 March 2026 after four years of renovation. Here you grasp the city behind the Edo gardens.
When Tokyo is at its best

Spring
Cherry blossom from late March to early April, for example along the Chidorigafuchi moat.

Summer
Hot and humid. The gardens belong to the early hours, the city to the evenings.

Autumn
Clear, mild days. Foliage in gardens and avenues usually turns from mid November.

Winter
Dry and bright, often with far views. Temples and gardens are pleasantly empty.
