One encounter that stays.
Elephants move through the reserves in herds and are usually the easiest to spot, especially at waterholes in the early morning. Buffalo also move in large groups and are regarded among experienced rangers as one of the most unpredictable animals of the Big Five. Rhinos, both white and black, stand at the centre of intensive protection programmes in South Africa's private reserves, as poaching remains a persistent threat. Leopards remain the shyest of the five, often active only at dusk or at night, while lions rest in the shade during the day before hunting in the cooler hours.
An experienced ranger knows the territory of each animal, its habits and the tracks it leaves behind. That knowledge turns a drive through the landscape into a genuine encounter with the wilderness.
